Meet… Becky Fermer

April 01, 2019

We know we’ve got a great team here at Aworth Survey Consultants – but it’s always really gratifying when this is acknowledged from outside the firm. For that reason, we were extremely proud when trainee Becky Fermer was named as a finalist in the ‘Young Employee of the Year’ category at the Uckfield Business Awards (which was open to team members aged under 24).

According to the Awards website: ‘In a tough employment market for young people, we are looking for the individual who will stand as a beacon of the dedication and talent that exists in the young people of Uckfield’.

Becky was nominated by her colleagues at Aworth and the judging process saw her shortlisted. She was then interviewed by representatives from TR Fastenings, the Uckfield-based organisation which sponsored this particular category.

“They came into the office to chat to me and find out more about what I do,” Becky explains. “Then I was invited to the Awards evening, where I was presented with a framed certificate – it was all a bit surreal and a little nerve-wracking but I did feel really proud.”

In addition to the endorsement by the Uckfield Business Awards, a recent client questionnaire completed by a client of MAPS@Aworth described the support they received from Becky as a ‘very efficient, first class service’.

Becky joined the team at Aworth as a trainee CAD technician/office assistant nearly 18 months ago and said that she was attracted to the role as it looked ‘interesting and a little different’. She was also drawn to the fact that the advert said it was a ‘trainee’ role, as she wanted to develop some new skills.

Becky enjoys the ‘variety’ her role offers, as her time is split between working in the MAPS@Aworth division and spending time in the CAD office. She explains that her work in the CAD office includes working on land surveys, building surveys and Land Registry plans.

“The jobs can take anything from something I can complete within a day to projects which can take several days,” Becky explains. “I’ve been trained up in CAD from scratch and I’m really enjoying it. I particularly like the  building survey side of things, working on site  elevations for instance.”

Maps@Aworth is an Ordnance Survey Mapping and Data Centre and a division of Aworth Survey Consultants. It supplies up-to-date Ordnance Survey mapping data, planning application maps and historical OS mapping, together with a large range of other professional map products.

“The majority of our clients using Maps@Aworth need maps for planning applications, whether they be architects, surveyors, developers or members of the public,” Becky explains. “I enjoy helping them to source the map they need and in a version which works for them – a paper copy which I send in the post or a PDF, which we can email through or in a DWG file for CAD.”

She continues: “I enjoy talking to our clients and making sure we supply good products to our customers. It’s also really interesting to find out more about maps and the different features on them; I enjoyed geography at school and I guess it’s an extension of that. I’m lucky because my work at Aworth is both interesting and varied.”

When she’s not at work Becky, who lives in Heathfield, enjoys crafts, particularly making greetings cards, running and walking her dog. She’s also a keen baker and has got into a habit of bringing some sweet treats into the office on a Monday – which gets the week off to a great start for her colleagues.

“Since she arrived Becky has made a great contribution to our firm, particularly to the two teams she works across,” says John Witherden, Managing Director at Aworth. “She’s always keen to learn new skills and we’ve been really happy with the progress she’s made in a short time. We are, of course, extremely proud of her being in finalist in the Uckfield Business Awards – it was a well-deserved recognition of her input here.”
