JOHN marks 45 YEARS

September 30, 2020

This month, Managing Director, John Witherden, is celebrating 45 years with Aworth Survey Consultants, having joined in 1975 as a trainee, straight from school.

I started to think seriously about a career in Land Surveying when I was studying for my A Levels,” says John. “It seemed to combine all the things I was interested in, offering me the chance to work outside, with technical equipment and in different places.”

John was taken on by the company’s original founder John Aworth, who since launching the firm in 1963 had worked on projects that would herald the arrival of modern motorway service stations and new residential housing estates.

“He was a charismatic, focused individual and he made an immediate impression on me,” John says. “He had started the company 12 years before with a small team of skilled people that had stayed and would continue to work alongside him as demand for their specialised services grew. It was a close knit workplace geared towards mentoring, training and nurturing talent.”

John’s career with the company progressed quickly and he was promoted to Surveyor, Technical Manager and Technical Director, before becoming MD in 1999, bringing with him a ‘consistency of approach, attention to detail and an understanding of client requirements’.

John adds: “Continual attention to these values is part of everyone’s approach, from the trainee up. I feel very fortunate to have had sufficient time as MD to make that kind of impact on the company and to see my values in action.”

He has held the position of Vice President of The Survey Association and is a Chartered Surveyor and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Civil Engineering Surveyors.

John has seen the firm through two recessions, which he describes as ‘at times, very difficult’, as well as the uncertainty of Brexit. But, the current Covid-19 pandemic he says is ‘even more testing’.

“This situation is unprecedented and very challenging,” John says. “However, when times are tough, the pressure to succeed and maintain our high standards intensifies. I believe our reputation as a trusted, experienced and reliable service provider over five decades has helped us to survive and thrive.”
