A year in our life

January 26, 2022

Twelve months ago, when we looked back on the unprecedented events of 2020, I think we believed that 2021 would mark a return to something we might recognise as ‘normal’. In the event, the pandemic has continued but, to be honest, there does seem to be more of an air of positivity.

During 2021, land with potential for development and housebuilding continued apace, with fast-track planning for brownfield regeneration, and more homes needing to be built on greenfield land if the government is to hit its target of building one million homes before the next general election.

We’ve been working closely with developers planning large developments of new housing, to house-builders which have been developing on brownfield sites to provide infill housing, as well as new social housing developments. The types of services we have been providing include topographical surveys, rights of light surveys and underground services surveys.

With people continuing to work from home, for at least part of the week, they are searching for ways to make their property more workspace friendly, as well as looking to create additional space for newly-acquired hobbies or for entertaining family and friends.

As a result, MAPS@Aworth – our Ordnance Survey (OS) Mapping and Data Centre - has been particularly busy with over 2,500 orders, from customers approaching us with a variety of mapping needs. The team has supported clients making planning applications for extending and remodelling their home and gardens, as well as those with boundary queries.

The past year saw a long-term project reach completion. We were involved with One Crown Place in Shoreditch, London, from the pre-planning stage in 2006 and, in the years since then, have provided a wide range of surveying services in collaboration with the project team.

Awards for notable projects Aworth have been involved, included: Key Worker Housing, Eddington, Cambridge (RIBA East Award & RIBA National Award Winner 2021), and Aberfeldy Village and One Crown Place (which were shortlisted for major awards).

Our site engineers were setting out boundaries, new builds, self-builds, portal frame units and even a tractor training facility.

Our surveyors worked on numerous projects last year, from schools & colleges to hospitals & medical facilities; car manufacturing plants to farming & industrial units; measuring one-bedroom flats to penthouse apartments & country properties.

In our offices last year, we handled the most pointcloud data in any year, modelled BIM and rights of light surveys; produced topographical and measured building surveys; provided utility services surveys, monitoring survey reports, legal mapping services and even produced rectified photography of a street mural.

We are working on providing further enhancements to our products and services over the coming year.

We hope very much to work with you in 2022.
